New York City is pretty high on almost everyone’s bucket list; mainly because of its rich history and historic sites. You simply cannot miss out on the opportunity to visit the city at least once in your lifetime. If you are one of those people who are yet to see the city, here is a first timer’s guide to better help decide to travel and to make your trip a bit seamless.
When to visit
The best time to visit New York is July/August when it’s summer and the weather is perfect. “Christmas is pretty good too when the city is beautifully decorated”, said a local. I visited in fall, there are very few sunny days and a lot of rainy days.
How to book your trip
It is good to plan your trip months in advance, that way you get to take a shot at the better deals and plan your site seeing activities. TripAdvisor is my go-to site for good deals, you can even opt-in to receive email alerts, for whenever prices dropped for particular destinations. You can even look out for package deals (which include; flights and hotel stay).
Where to stay
There are tonnes of hotels in the city and plenty outside of the city. If you are looking at those closest to the city, the prices can very high, hotels outside of the city are just as good and more on the budget-friendly side. The NYC transport system is pretty good and convenient, it is easy to get into the city.
I booked my stay with LeTap Inn at JFK. I was a little scared at first reading the reviews, there will always be bad reviews. I also had a very bad experience confirming my reservation with the hotel, on the other hand, the hotel was great for the price, I loved my room. The hotel goes for USD 100 plus per night. There are other affordable hotels close to JFK.
What to do/where to visit in New York City
Shopping: you can visit some of the close by malls that houses all your favorite shopping stores and boutiques.
Watch a movie: visiting the theater was an experience. The Theaters are state of the art and very cozy. It will be an experience like no other.
Ride the subway: The subway system in New York City is pretty awesome and mind-blowing, you can travel to a lot of major destinations via the subway.
Walk the Brooklyn Bridge: this is a very famous spot to visit in New York, the bridge takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete, depending on the stops in between. You can see the Statue of Liberty from a distance and also the Empire State Building.
Visit Times Square: possibly the most crowded place in the city. There is a lot to see, do and eat in Times Square.
The Oculus Building “World Trade Centre“: very impressive sightseeing and pretty cool architecture and also very rich in history.
Grab a Slice of Pizza: I was told NYC has the best pizza and it has lived up to that. You definitely have to grab a bite on your first trip. There are quite a few pizza spots around Times Square for you to check out.
