On average, we grow a half an inch of new hair each month. Breakage and splitting ends sometimes make it hard for us to see this growth. Although the rate at which hair grows is genetic, there are ways to assist your body’s growth cycle through external application of protein. Our hair is made up of mainly protein and it’s main function is to build and repair.
Everyday styling and environmental pollution can strip moisture out of your hair. The best way to put moisture and shine back to your hair is by getting a protein treatment. Protein smooths the cuticle of the hair, creating smoother strands and stronger hair. It can be beneficial to incorporate Protein Hair Treatment into your routine every four to six weeks if your hair is “normal” or every two weeks if you are trying to repair damage from heat, color processing or split ends. However, if you are experiencing excessive dryness, Protein Hair Treatment is not the solution’ you may need a conditioning treatment.

Protein Hair Treatment
Instead of buying sometimes overly expensive protein treatments, you can create your very own by using ingredients from home.
Egg Mask:Egg is the best source of protein for your hair. The yolk is rich in fat and protein which is extremely moisturizing. The white is full of bacteria eating enzymes which cleanses your hair and scalp. Use a full egg for normal to dry hair. For oily hair and scalp, use only whites.
- Beat a couple eggs, apply the mixture to your hair, cover with plastic cap and allow it to sit for 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water, then shampoo and condition. The cool water is very important to properly get rid of the egg. If you find that their is an unpleasant scent, add a few drops of lemon juice.
Mayo and Avocado Mask:Mayonnaise is made of oil and egg so it’s very moisturizing for your hair. The high-fat content of avocados makes hair less dry and prone to breakage.
- Mix a couple tablespoons of pure mayonnaise with half of a mashed avocado (remove skin first), apply to hair and cover with plastic cap, let it sit for 20-30 minutes then rinse with cool water, shampoo and condition.
Yogurt: Dairy products like cream and yogurt contains Lactic acid which gently cleanses while fat moisturizes. Mix egg and yogurt for a deep conditioning protein treatment.
- Massage 3 tbsp yogurt into your hair. Let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo hair.
